The day started at 3:00AM. My usual time to get up for an Ironman race. Coffee and oatmeal for breakfast, double check all my gear, pack the car and head to the race.
The main reason for getting up so early is to get a good parking spot. Which I did. I made my way to body marking, dropped my special needs bag and headed for the transition zone. It was still dark out and it took me a bit to find my bike. I loaded it up with my water bottle and food for the first leg.
After pumping up the tires, thank you to yet another nameless Ironman who let me borrow his pump, I stumbled to the swim start and scoped out the area. It would be a wide start to the swim.
Now that I had everything in place, there was not much to do except to rest and wait. I found a bench and sat down to meditate and slowly stretch.
While waiting for the race to start the Ottawa contingent started rolling in. A few stopped by to say hello. Eventually, we all made our way to the start of the race, piped in my one of the locals.
The sun was coming up over the mountains, the air was warm, no clouds, a beautiful morning.
A canon shot and the race was on. The swim was one big loop and pretty easy. I have come to realize that wide swim starts are usually pretty easy swims. Lots of room for everyone. A little bit of bumping at the turn around, but smooth sailing all the way back to the beach.
The bike ... to be continued
